The panchang is the daily Vedic almanac, giving tithi, nakshatra, yoga, karana and vara for the day. Hora divides the day into planetary hours, each ruled by one planet. Prashnavali answers a specific question from the sky at the moment you ask it. Together they help you pick better timings and get guidance on one clear question.

What the panchang is

Panchang means the five limbs of the day. It is the daily Vedic almanac, and it tells you five things about today: the tithi, the nakshatra, the yoga, the karana and the vara. The vara is simply the weekday, each ruled by a planet. The tithi is the lunar day, based on the changing angle between the Moon and the Sun.

People use the panchang to choose good timings for weddings, travel, buying, starting work and worship. It is not about luck in a superstitious sense. It is a way of reading the mood of the day, the same way you check the weather before stepping out. This app shows today's panchang free, with the terms explained in simple words.

What the panchang tells you

Each limb describes a different flavour of time. The tithi shows the emotional and creative tone of the day, since it tracks the Moon's light. The nakshatra, one of the twenty-seven lunar constellations, shows the finer quality of the moment and which activities suit it. The yoga and karana add subtle strength or caution. The vara gives the ruling planet of the day.

Read together, these five tell you whether a day leans toward growth, settling, conflict or rest. A day with a strong tithi and a supportive nakshatra is good for beginnings. A day with a difficult yoga is better for finishing and clearing rather than launching something new.

What hora is (planetary hours)

Hora means hour, and in Jyotish it means a planetary hour. Each hora is ruled by one of the planets, in a fixed repeating order. The day's first hora begins at sunrise and belongs to the planet that rules the weekday. From there the horas follow a set sequence through the day and into the night, from one sunrise to the next.

The length of a hora is not sixty minutes. Daytime is split into twelve equal horas and night into twelve more, so horas stretch in summer and shrink in winter. This is why you need the correct sunrise and sunset for your city to use hora well. The calculator handles that for you.

How to use hora in daily life

Think of each hora as a small window with its own mood. The Sun's hora suits authority, meetings and anything where you want to be seen and heard. The Moon's hora suits family, care and emotional matters. Jupiter's hora is good for study, teaching, money decisions and prayers. Venus suits art, love and beauty. Mercury suits writing, trade, messages and short travel.

Mars suits bold action and physical work, but avoid conflict in it. Saturn's hora is slow and heavy, better for hard labour, cleaning and long-term commitments than for fresh starts. People often use hora to time a first call, an interview, a purchase or a difficult conversation. It is a simple habit that adds a layer of calm to busy days.

What prashnavali is

Prashna means question, and prashnavali is the branch that answers one specific question from the sky at the moment you ask it. It is called horary astrology in the West. Unlike a birth chart, which reads a whole life, a prashna chart reads a single matter, such as a job, a marriage proposal, a property deal or a lost item.

The old texts, like the Prashna Marga, treat the moment of a sincere question the way they treat a birth. The idea is that a real question arises at a meaningful moment, and the planets at that moment carry the answer. It is one of the most practical tools in Jyotish, because it needs no birth time at all.

How a prashna chart is read

The rising sign, the Lagna, stands for you, the person asking. The house that naturally rules your subject holds the answer: the tenth for career, the seventh for marriage and partnerships, the fourth for home and property, the eleventh for gains. The lord of that house is the main significator. The Moon is read for your state of mind and the flow of events.

A strong Lagna lord and a waxing, well-placed Moon lean toward yes. A weak or combust lord, or a Moon placed in a difficult house, leans toward no or delay. Timing is judged from the nature of the signs: movable signs move quickly, fixed signs hold things back, and dual signs bring a middle pace.

How to ask a prashna question well

The quality of the answer depends on the quality of the question. Ask something real, something you genuinely need to know and are ready to hear the answer to. Keep it to one clear matter. Asking five things at once muddies the chart. Ask once, with full attention, and then let it rest.

Do not ask the same question again and again hoping for a different reply. The tradition is clear that repeating a question after an answer you dislike spoils the reading. Note the exact time and place you ask, because the chart is cast for that moment. Sincerity is part of the method, not a polite extra.

Common mistakes people make

The first mistake is treating the panchang as a set of good and bad days with no context. A so-called difficult day may be perfect for one task and wrong for another. The second is ignoring the city. Tithi, nakshatra and hora all depend on local sunrise and the local horizon, so a panchang read for another city can be off.

The third mistake is asking prashna as a test rather than a real question. The fourth is reading a single factor, such as the Moon alone, and ignoring the Lagna lord and the house lord. A careful reading weighs several signals together before it speaks, and it offers a window of time rather than a fixed date.

A concrete example of a day's use

Say a student has an important interview. She checks the panchang and finds the nakshatra supports learning and communication, which is encouraging. She then checks hora and sees the interview slot falls in Mercury's hora, the planet of speech and trade. That is a supportive combination, so she prepares with calm and speaks clearly.

She also asks a prashna: will I get this role. The Lagna lord is strong and the Moon applies to the tenth-house lord, a positive sign, though a fixed sign suggests the reply may take a few weeks. Notice how the panchang set the mood, the hora picked the best window, and the prashna answered the one pressing question.

How this connects to the rest of the app

The panchang and hora give the timing layer. Your kundli gives the lifelong layer, with dasha and divisional charts showing which themes are active for you now. When you know both, a decision gets much clearer. A favourable hora means little if your current dasha is asking you to slow down and consolidate.

Prashna sits on top as the question tool, useful when you need an answer and have no time for a full reading. In three years of practice and more than a thousand charts read, I use these three together constantly: the panchang for the day, the hora for the hour, and the prashna for the one thing that is keeping you awake. When a question deserves real depth, a personal consultation is there, from 499 to 2,000 rupees, with the free tools always open.

What are the five parts of the panchang?

They are tithi, the lunar day; nakshatra, the lunar constellation; yoga, a combined Sun-Moon measure; karana, half of a tithi; and vara, the weekday and its ruling planet. Read together, they describe the overall quality and mood of the whole day.

How long is a hora?

A hora is not sixty minutes. The time from sunrise to sunset is split into twelve equal daytime horas, and night into twelve more, so each hora changes length with the season. You need your city's sunrise and sunset to time it correctly.

Which hora is good for starting something new?

Jupiter's hora is generally favoured for beginnings, study and money matters, and Mercury's for communication, trade and travel. Venus suits art and relationships. Avoid Saturn's slow hora and Mars's harsh hora for fresh starts, though both are fine for hard work.

Do I need my birth time for prashnavali?

No. A prashna chart is cast for the moment you ask the question, so your birth time is not needed. You only need the exact time and place of the question. This makes it useful when birth details are unknown or uncertain.

Can I ask the same prashna question again?

The tradition advises against it. Repeating a question because you disliked the first answer tends to spoil the reading. Ask once, sincerely, with full attention, and accept what the moment gives. If it is unclear, wait and ask a sharper, single question later.

Is the panchang the same for everyone in India?

No. Tithi, nakshatra and hora depend on local sunrise, sunset and the local horizon, so they differ by city. A panchang read for another place can be off. Always check the panchang for your own location for accurate and reliable timings.
